11 BIG QUESTIONS ABOUT ARCHITECTURE?
This is a topic or list of questions I originally heard about on Mark R lepage’s podcast. Entrearchitect. He has a podcast that discusses the business of architecture and his firm located in New York. He and several other podcasters and bloggers were sent a list of questions from Bob Borson of Life of an Architect blog.
I was not included on this list, but thought i would comment on the questions with my own thoughts.
Here are the 11 questions Bob presented to the group and i will just go through them one at a time:
What kind of projects were you doing when you first started as an architect?
Niles Bolton – Student housing
TMc – Resort 2nd homes and resort buildings in Rosemary Beach
Kuo Diedrich – Single family homes, national retailers, Recreational facilities and resorts
How many projects can you expect to be working on at once?
Right now i am working on 2 golf clubs, one salon, two houses are under construction, and just finished a design competition. All of these are in different stages of design.
How often do you work in a team?
Every project is a team effort. With resort work contractors are typically in early giving us better look into pricing and budget. The design charette.
How important is an innovative mind to the company?
You have to be creative.
What key things do you look for in potential new hires?
I am not sure how to answer this question, I have not been in that position yet. I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of different people with various work ethics. I would have to say the people I have enjoyed working with the most are the nice people. The calm person that does not get over stressed.
How important is diversity to your company?
It is important but not important at the same time. If someone can perform and is a go getter than you can only benefit from multiple cultural perspectives.
How big of a role does HR play in your company?
Zero
Would you say architecture is a field for everyone?
Definitely not. You need to be driven and dedicated to work long hours. You also need to have a flexible personality. meaning that designs change. clients change their minds, and you need to be able to adapt, evolve and resolve.
What is the best asset in your company?
The best physical asset is obviously the computer and software. The next would be the internet. these are things that allow us to excel and be productive. Our past experiences are our most important intellectual asset. Our wealth of knowledge that we continue to build upon.
Describe your best employee in one word?
Investigative
What style architecture do you love most?
I am drawn to the transitional architecture. The modern architecture that incorporates traditional materials and reconstructs contemporary details. Open areas that blend the interior and exterior. Then I also really appreciate the tiny house architecture at the moment. There is a craftsmanship. A personalization that goes into each one of the homes.
That is really what it is all about. Creating your personal space that you are going to share with the world. Creating a built environment that can have an impact on your life for the better.
Show wrap-up
Shoutouts for this weeks show goes to Mark R. LePage from entrearchitect.com. He has been a very helpful resource for everything related to the business of architecture.
I hope that this episode gave you a look into who i am as an architect as well as a glimpse into what whitewash studio is and how we approach projects and design.
Happy to help get you started with your project. Would love to hear from you.
I wanted to end this show with a great quote from Mark R. LePage . Mark said:
“Healthy profitable businesses allow architects to pursue their passions for architecture, to serve others and to give back to society.”
